BiographyCeramics manufacturer, Hanley, Staffordshire. Formerly J. Ridgway, Bates & Co. in Shelton (1856-58), the firm became Bates, Brown-Westhead & Moore in 1859, in Hanley, when the partners were William Bates, Thomas Chappell Brown-Westhead and William Moore.
In December 1861 William Bates retired from the business, which was carried on as Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co., or T.C. Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. The partners included Thomas Chappell Brown-Westhead, William Moore, James Moore, Robert George Scrivener and Edward Moss.
The company exhibited at many of the International Universal Exhibitions, winning a gold medal in Paris in 1878. As well as wares for the domestic market, the firm specilased in wares for export which were often marked with the distributor or seller. They were succeeded by Cauldon Ltd from 1905-20.
